Hakan Talu was born in 1960 in Istanbul. He graduated from the Department of Turkish Music at the Istanbul Technical University, State Music Conservatory in 1984 with honours and later he also earned his Masters degree, again with honours, in 1985. His graduation thesisses were on 19. century Ottoman music and tanbour method.

Strong believer in being specialised in music, he focused his studies and started to make his researches on Classical, Mystical (Sufi) Turkish and Mevlevi music since his school years.

Besides his conservatory education, he learned Mevlevi tradition and music from prominent names of the time like Mevlana’s 21. generation grandson; Celaleddin Celebi, last sheikh of Bahariye Mevlevi Lodge; Selman Tüzün Dede, last head of whirling dervishes of Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge; Ahmet Bican, and Neyzenbasi; Dogan Ergin.

Mr. Talu has performed in many cultural and arts centers, renowned universities, and major cities in the United States and throughout the world. In the course of his twenty year career -- as a musician, consultant and Music Director -- he has performed in more than 200 Turkish Sufi and Classical music concerts and Sema ceremonies, as well as recording sessions. The group he has formed with his friends in 1994 took the name Istanbul Music and Sema Group in 1998.

A renowned tanbur player, Mr. Talu has a deep knowledge not only of musical performance but also musicology. He has also written and collaborated widely, conducts workshops and gives lectures.

Talu’s first book, "Ask ile - With Love," was published in 2002. It is a reference book, with 2 companion CDs, covering all forms of Turkish liturgical music, both in Turkish and English.
The book is available in many important libraries around the world.

His second book, published in 2005, with accompanying CD, "Mevlevi Müziği/Music of Whirling Dervishes," introduces the music of The Mevlevi Order and explains the whirling ceremony dating back 700 years.

He has taught tanbur as a faculty member 11 years between 1985 –1996 at the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory, Turkish Music Department. He is currently an artist for T.R.T (Turkish State Radio and Television) as a specialist in tanbur since 1985.

In addition to his work with Istanbul Music and Sema Group, he performs Turkish Classical and Sufi music with a variety of noted musicians.

Hakan Talu prepares and present a weekly radio programme "Forms in Turkish Music" at TRT Radio.

Karunesh - Call of the Mystic

Following a near fatal motorcycle accident Bruno Reuter (born 1956 in Cologne, Germany) turned to Spiritualism. It was in a commune in India, under the guidance of master Osho, that Reuter met musicians from many different cultures. The result was Karunesh (translating as 'Compassion' in Sanskrit).

While other genre labels like Narada and Windham Hill diversified from their new age roots, Real Music has been consistent over the years in providing nothing but the best music for relaxation, meditation and spiritual enhancement. Their most notable recordings come from an Eastern Buddhist mindset, with multi-instrumentalist Karunesh leading the pack on the strength of previous discs Zen Breakfast and Nirvana Café. His basic approach to contemplative music involves a blend of exotic textures (bells, chimes, Tibetan bowls, sitar and Chinese instruments) with easy grooves and rich walls of ambience. The new collection's trance inducing instrumentation and sensuous rhythms begins with a few minutes of pure ambience and sitar, before slowly introducing a gentle percussive line ("For the Joy of It All"); Avinash's graceful Indian violin carries a mournful beauty that is also part of the similarly hypnotic, easy grooving "Monsoon's Dance." Bikram's Bansuri flute floats through beautifully in key locations, such as the introduction of "Mount Kailash." While the uninitiated might feel that there's a certain repetitive nature to the tracks (which usually begin with sparse instrumentation before the electricity is turned on), the intention is more to invoke a sense of inner peace than to be truly innovative. The title of the richly textured "Zensual" sums up the mystical intent of the thought provoking exercise.

Should one judge an album by its cover? Not artistic design, but by what seems to be promised by the art and copy?
Zen Breakfast, the title, the distinctly Asian painting, and the classic Zen overflowing-teacup story all point to music offering empty-mind austerity, the stuff of wind cutting through bamboo on a moonless night. Karunesh tosses a bamboo bone in that direction with occasional Asian melodies using sampled shakuhachi flute and accents of gongs and chimes. On the whole his music is reflective, but, simplistic though it may seem, zen experiences necessitate a stillness, a grating between the impermanance of sound and the everything/nothing of the void. Zen Breakfast is not that, but the album does offer a serene, meditative -at times even blissful — musical experience. Karunesh does not stray far from beautiful, lush pads of resonant synth strings and Western-friendly scales, melodic lines, chord fills, and harmonies. The music pulses with a relaxed reflective breathing cadence tinged with a mystical melancholy. A few surprises — the spooky whish of a bullroarer and the silken blusy guitar played by 'Govi' — waken the senses, but you won't feel like punishing your knees with a severe round of zazen meditation. 'Zen Breakfast' offers music to get lost in dreamy reveries, not to 'just observe' the mind.

About the Artist
Every so often, a musician emerges who is quite unlike any that have come before; a musician that reflects not an imitation of styles and tones, but who embodies the entire spectrum of styles in such a unique way that "categorizing" is impossible. Guitarist Govi (go' vee) is one of those artists.

A native of Germany, Govi spent eight years living in India. "My approach comes from the meditative and creative environment I experienced while living in India as well as playing with musicians from many different cultures and backgrounds," he says. It was there that Govi started playing the mandolin, mandola cello, sitar, bouzouki, charango and the 8-string ukulele. While in India, he also established a friendship with prominent German new age artist, Deuter. Their mutual admiration and respect led to Deuter co-producing Govi's debut album Sky High throughout which Deuter can be heard playing flutes and keyboards.

Govi became fascinated with the guitar very early in life when he simply walked past one in a store window and decided that was the instrument he wanted to play. In his teens, Govi performed as the lead guitarist in bands that played everything from rock to blues, including early Beatles and Pink Floyd. These experiences led to his first professional gig as a member of a group that played original material and won a national band competition and a recording contract which allowed them to tour throughout Germany.

Your Lingering Touch, 7th release from Real Music, represents the spectrum of Govi at his most romantic, while the 6th No Strings Attached is a celebration of Govi at his exuberant best -- on Billboard's New Age Chart for over a year. Guitar Odyssey was his fifth release for Real Music, another chart favorite, following the highly successful Passion & Grace, Heart of a Gypsy, Sky High and Cuchama.

Govi describes his compositions as "the natural and inevitable result of moving deeply into the wellsprings of my creativity. My music is a reflection of my vision of life rather than mere notes on a sheet," he adds. The result is a deeply mystical quality that is both jubilant and pensive, music that ultimately reflects the dimensions of the human spirit in all its complexity and simplicity.

"Passion & Grace" (also from Real Music) exhibits the grand style of guitar playing from the Man himself. So enlightening, so relaxing, this album exudes such beautiful melodies that I'm totally captivated and transformed into a state of euphoria, from the opening guitar riffs till the last bits from this rather short (46:22) CD! Never mind the short running time, just spin it again and again. I never get enough of Govi's P&G. Remember? - I have three other superb GOVI albums to satisfy my passion for Govi's music. All tracks from P&G are excellent, but my favourites gotta be "Tears of Joy","Sailing Away" and "Kea Lani"

[TECH NOTE: Govi's albums, both under the older label (Real Music) and current label (Higher Octave Music) are truly of 'audiophile' status. Even with my mini-bucks entry level hi-fi system, the recording/sonic qualities on these labels are (to me at least) at par with the other world-acclaimed audiophile record labels. The pristine tones/timbre (attack & decay) from Govi's various types of guitars are laid bare for your discerning ears. Absolutely brilliant!]
