Synopsis
Are there wild hogs in the United States that can grow to monstrous sizes? A 1,110 pound hog was shot and killed in Georgia, while many beasts in Texas have been reported near that size. A MonsterQuest investigation looks to see if these are wild or raised hogs. Boar attack victims are interviewed, while hog hunters, researchers, and trackers look for one of these giant beasts.

"Unexplained declines in many wildlife species have created A MYSTERY IN ALASKA. The Steller's sea lions that populate the Alaskan coastline are powerful, playful, and sometimes rowdy creatures who bump and jostle each other on land but acquire a sublime gracefulness in the water. They are also the subject of a strange and tragic mystery: Steller sea lions are rapidly disappearing from one of the last great wildlife strongholds of the world, and no one knows why.

Naturalist filmmaker Shane Moore, who has been working in the Alaskan wilderness for much of the past 10 years, brings a sense of urgency and new understanding to this puzzle in A MYSTERY IN ALASKA. As scientists and environmentalists race the clock to find answers, pressure has been growing on Alaska's fishing industry to suspend most of its pollock fishing, on the suspicion that it is robbing Steller's sea lions of an important source of food. But new research illustrated in this film shows that a broad combination of factors could be responsible for the sea lions' plight."

BBC WildLife - Special Lions Spies In The Den

The Spy in the Den of the title is "Bouldercam", a motorised camera with state-of-the-art microphones disguised as a rock covered in leaves. It was invented specifically for this project of infiltrating a pride of lions to record their lives over a period of a couple of years. Miniaturisation in camera technology has previously allowed presenter David Attenborough to discover the intricacies of the world's smallest denizens; it needed something as goofily practical as this for him to get within a safe distance of nature's far more dangerous predator. Mere inches from the growing cubs, we learn about the pecking order of their family and social interaction on a South African plain. As the females do all the hunting, we see the subtleties of stealth by turning paws on their side for a softer stalking sound. During a marathon mating season of more than 150 times in three days(!), we learn of the male's adaptation of the biting neck lock to keep the female placid. There are dozens more of these intimate observations that add to what was already a fascinating creature's lifestyle. Two years of material has been condensed into a tantalising hour documentary that will leave you hungry for more.
